DSM Asbestos Removal Site Setup

Comprehensive Training Programme

DSM has a policy that all site employees and relevant office employees receive asbestos training relevant to their role. Three general levels of training are applied:

Asbestos Awareness Training

All employees on site or visiting site receive this training as a minimum. Designed to ensure visual identification of suspect materials and understanding of required actions.

CAT B Training

For employees dealing with non-licensed ACMs such as thermoplastic floor tiles, toilet cisterns, gaskets and asbestos cement products. Includes annual refresher training, two-yearly medical tests, and face fit testing.

CAT C Training

For staff involved in removal of licensed asbestos products such as asbestos insulation and asbestos insulation board. Includes annual training, two-yearly medical tests, and quantitative face fitting by fit2fit qualified organisation.

Site Identification System

DSM’s standard identification colours for asbestos-containing materials on site:

Red
Notifiable asbestos
Yellow
Non-notifiable asbestos
Green
Non-asbestos (potentially containing asbestos)

Decontamination Unit (DCU) Process

Passing through the DCU after transiting an enclosure, operatives will follow strict protocols to ensure complete decontamination and safety compliance.

1

DCU Dirty End

Remove transit overalls, transit/work footwear and disposable underwear. Items not to be reused must be put in a waste bag. Pass into the shower stage.

2

DCU Shower Area

Shower and clean the RPE thoroughly whilst still being worn. Remove RPE and dispose of filters or fit filter cover. Continue to shower using shower gel and nail brush. Do not dry down in the shower area.

3

DCU Clean End

Dry down in clean end and bag used towels. Dress in normal clothes and leave the DCU by the clean door. Store masks, correctly putting on charge if required.

Safety First Approach

The DCU process is a critical safety control that prevents asbestos contamination from spreading beyond the work area. All operatives are trained to follow these procedures meticulously, ensuring zero cross-contamination.

Safe Waste Disposal

All waste removed from enclosures or respirator control zones will be double bagged and taken directly to sealed asbestos waste skips.

The proposed landfill for waste is identified to minimise travel distance, leaving as small a transport carbon footprint as possible. This site is suitably licensed to take the identified waste, which will be transported using a licensed haulier.

All tickets will be maintained and included within the project health and safety file for passing over to the Client at the end of the project.
